Black Stallion win 1st game
Watching the Black Stallions (Calgary women cricket team) play their first game on Saturday against the under 11 & 15 mixed boys team. There was something exciting about watching the first cricket game ever played by a woman’s team on the park. It was definately a note worthy event for what it meant to women’s cricket and women atheletics in general.
Watching the girls in their intensity and enthusiasum made me really excited for what lies a head.
The girls have made huge strides in such a short amount of time. We have gone from having one player know how to bowl, to about 5 bowling with some accuracy. In terms of batting they are learning and practicing the proper techniques and are learning to understand how to read the ball and play acoordingly, sticking on the wicket and looking for runs. This will really help in the big picture of things. The big picture being able learn and grow from every cricket opportunity be a match, training session or talk of inspiration. whether we win or not. is not as important as playing with Sportmanship, being able to shake hands with the team that just beat us and thanking them for the experience On behalf of the women, let me take this opportunity to thank you for you unwaivering support and giving the women a chance to shine and make their mark in history, making their contribution to this great game Cricket.
What a way to kick off their season, after months and many long hours of practice the Black stallion, were presented with a challenge of taking on the Cubs (U-11 and U-15) mixed team under the guidance of Bobby and Faqer.
Saturday July 04,2009 will go down in history as the day the first ever Calgary women’s cricket team (Black stallion) played their first match.
Amber Fraser captain of the day won the toss and on a cloudy, skidding wicket chose to put the cubs in to bat hoping tthe bowler would use the condition to limit the Cubs to a low score. The young boys showed great temperament to post 60 runs for 7 wickets in 15overs. Zafishan was the peak of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 12, Amber 4overs for 4run
Needing just 4 runs an over to chase down the Cub’s total, the lefthander/right hand combination of the opening pair of Omaima and Amber rotating the strike proved quite disruptive for the young bowler’s line and length, giving quite a few extra to aid the chase.
Needing 30 to win from 8 overs, Harshil’s direct throw had Omaima run out. Wajiha joined Amber to keep the scoreboard ticking before a great off cutter from Huzafa Cheema got Amber caught behind.
When Zafishan walked on the wicket with 12 runs to win, she needed two overs to bag the win. Great day!, Great game! Great sportsmanship between the two team.
Great thanks to the Junior Coordinator Bobby for organizing the Cubs team and Umpiring during the game, The parents who brought their kids to play and also volunteered to score.
Thanks to the CDCL executive for their continued support.
